Sometimes life is overwhelming – sickness, death, divorce, mental anguish,  … We have been through life’s tough times too and know you need something to help get you through.

Hangin’ on Faith is here to provide hope and encouragement during those times. We are reaching out to help in various ways.  On this website are stories from real people who may have gone through similar situations. Sometimes reading about how someone else has prevailed will give you the strength and encouragement to make it through too. Read our stories to gain hope for yourself or share with another.  Most storytellers are even available for contact for more personal help and sharing.

Knowing there is a way to make it through a difficult time may provide a ray of hope...

A Story of Forgiveness

By Rob,Raleigh, North Carolina

My 38 year old sister, Leslie, was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. I didn't know why my sister with a 2 year old and a 7 year old would be leaving us, but I did know that I could trust God that, as a believer in Jesus Christ, Leslie was going to be with Him since He'd just taken me through a personal battle with OCD, Obsessive, Compulsive, Disorder.

I want to share with you a letter that I wrote to a group of people that had been praying for Leslie and my family. I wrote this a few days after she passed away. I share it with you because it once again shows that we serve a God who is alive and a God who is with us every step, even our step from physical death to eternal life. Here is the letter:

You all know Les' marriage was on the rocks before her diagnosis. It got worse as things went on. She was so angry and hurt by her husbands words and actions. I knew she was going to die and I didn't want her to die angry. I prayed that she would be able to resolve that anger. I didn't see any progress in this area and I couldn't understand why nothing was happening.

Turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie.
Oh my, I'm full!
The after Thanksgiving rush, Christmas shopping and baking.
Oh my, my head is in a whirl!

Does all of this sound familiar? Before the end of August the retail stores have Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas items on the shelf. They want us to begin buying now and forget the real reason for the season. With the holiday season fast approaching how do we prepare our hearts for Advent from Nov. 29 through Dec. 24. Advent is the time we should be preparing our heart for the celebration of Jesus' arrival in the world over 2000 years ago.

In Matthew 6:19-20 we are instructed "not to store up yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." We can choose to fall prey to the secular retail buying spree or to store treasures in heaven and give thanks in the spirit of the Lord. Now is the time to prepare our hearts and be thankful to God and show our appreciation for Jesus. Instead of overeating and making a long list of what we want for Christmas, we should open our hearts and give gifts to Jesus -- give of your time by volunteering, donate financially to a charity, or buy food or gifts for a needy child or family.

When we give in the spirit of the Lord we will have many treasures to be thankful for in the coming year. Matthew 6:21 says "For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be." Many blessings to you and your loved ones during this holiday season. Cindy Holliday Volunteer
