God is Good

By Tony, Atlanta

Two years ago I lay in a hospital bed after the doctor shared his prognosis of my condition. "Tony, the primary source was removed but unfortunately it is stage IV having metastasized multiple times in your liver as well as the presence of innumerable pulmonary metastasized nodules. With proven drugs we can maintain our quality of life for a period of time."

In other words, "Tony you have colon cancer stage IV. There is no cure only treatment to extend you life slightly and minimize the suffering. You should be dead in 1-2 years"

Note: These thoughts are from Kathy Wood who lost her step-mom recently.

The night my step-mom passed two familiar passages from the Bible came together for me as I lay awake in bed.

The first passage was about the night Jesus was to be captured - just before he was murdered. He was praying to his father, God, and pleading that He not have to go through with God's plan and be put to death as the offering required for our poor choices. His prayer ends with "BUT not my will, but yours be done" - that's the part I normally focus on - that he was giving up HIS choice and trusted in God's choice.

But that night lying in bed what I was drawn to understand better was that He (Jesus) was both God and man - just as was predicted so many years before. He had been born of Mary (man) and of the Spirit (God). He indeed was man and as was the plan - he came here to understand all that we endure. He, like all of us today, suffered sorrow and loss in His life. He's been where we are - He understands.

The other passage that came to mind was a promise that only someone who understands our needs so intimately - as we experience all the suffering in this world - that someone would really understand how deeply we need the gift of peace. Peace when it makes no sense to have it - peace, which when we ask for it in the name of Jesus, God will give it to us. The passage says to pray - in the name of Jesus, and you will have peace beyond all understanding - when it simply makes no sense to have it. A peace will come in your heart and mind.

Let's all pray for God's peace during difficult times.
