Featured Story - Surviving a Divorce
By Alison, Raleigh NC

For better for worse, in sickness and in health, "till death do us part"...words familiar to all of us; words we’ve either pledged ourselves, or witnessed others pledge. Words I took seriously and believed both my husband and I meant when we joyously wed each other. A covenant was made to each other, in the presence of many witnesses; but more importantly a covenant made before God. We were both committed Christians, both believing that God had brought us together for a lifetime.

So, what do you do when after 18 years of marriage your union is invaded by the presence of “another woman?” The shock waves that infiltrated my being left me astounded, perplexed, angry, betrayed and rejected. I was left questioning how this could ever be. My world had literally fallen apart. I have lived my life with a strong focus centered on the family and marriage that which I valued dearly and it had become polluted. This was not how I thought the script of my life would read.

This past weekend the Hangin' on Faith team participated in a local American Cancer Society "Relay for Life". It was a lot of fun and a beautiful occasion to honor cancer survivors and remember those who have passed on. The event raised money to help stop the dreaded cancer disease.

It was an all night event held on a high school track. At one point, they turned off all the lights so you could focus on the 1000+ luminary bags lining the entire track. Each had the name of a person being remembered or honored. It was quite beautiful! Plus they used luminaries to spell out the word HOPE on the bleachers. I loved that since that's a big part of what our ministry is about!

Another part of the event honored survivors and had each one introduce themselves. It was sad to hear what people had suffered through, but awesome to hear when many people added things like: "By the Grace of God" or "Praise the Lord." Yeah!!!

What does it mean to be a survivor? The dictionary says "to exist in spite of adversity." The thesaurus had a long list of words including: "to pull through; to bear; to endure; to hold on; to persist; to last; to tough it out." There were three others that reminded me of a story from the Bible: "keep afloat, ride it out, and weather it out."

The apostle Paul was a prisoner on his way to Rome to be judged by Caesar. The journey included a voyage aboard a ship that faced hurricane winds threatening to destroy the ship and all who were on it. For 15 days they battled! For 14 days they did not eat but they managed to survive, to weather it out.

The sailors clearly had wisdom in their trade as they tied ropes around the ship to hold it together. Hard work certainly played a part during the 15 days. But without Paul telling them the Lord would save them, they would have given up. He said they were to trust in that hope and everyone did survive!

Admittedly I struggle some times with my trust in that hope. But I do believe God is our hope and pray that He will forgive my lack of faith. Seeing all the participants at the Relay for Life reminded me of the power of hope and faith and how we can endure whatever life throws at us and survive.
