Be Still

By Emma, Carson

I was a Licensed Vocational Nurse and have worked in the Oncology Unit. I usually cried every time one of my patients died. And I'd feel the pain of the family who was left behind. Last March I received the most devastating news in my life.

What a surprise to me when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My first reaction was "No way!" and my second was "No way!" I told the nurse practitioner, "I refuse to accept this. This is not the plan of my God for me!" I asked my husband, who was with me when I received the breaking news, if I am was a bad person that deserved to have this deadly disease and if God really loves me, how could He let this thing happened to me. My husband said, "God loves you very much and He will be with us throughout this fight."

Love is ... Do you remember that newspaper cartoon? It was just one frame and it showed sweet expressions of love.

Have you ever heard, "If you love someone, set them free and if they come back it is love." I heard that in my teenage years and it seemed so wise! As an adult, however, I think: allow them freedom as needed to find themselves, and wait and encourage - but certainly not "set them free."

There is an old rock song, "Love Stinks!" Well... sometimes relationships aren't easy and they cause a great deal of pain but hopefully they are worth it. I'm about to lose my step-mom. She and my Dad have developed a deep and tender love over many years and I fear how much pain he will feel when she passes. Hopefully, he will feel blessed for the many memories in their life that God allowed them.

Another popular saying was, "Love means never having to say you are sorry." That doesn't work well in my home. I agree that love should forgive without an apology - but it's still nice to hear. In my home, love is about, "I love you to the moon" (a sign in my son's room) and "Always kiss me goodnight" (in our bedroom). Love is about hugs hello and goodbye. It is about applying toothpaste to my spouse's toothbrush to show I still care even when we are fighting.

Love - it is both a verb and a noun. The clichés about it are endless. The number of ways it is described is limitless. People share stories that try to describe it. Finding our way through love can be confusing when we listen to the world. However, the Bible has over 500 references about love - so we can learn about how to love another individual.

Here are a few of my favorite "love" verses from scripture that we can trust and try to live by:

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. - 1 John 4:7

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. - 1 Peter 4:8

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. - 1 Corinthians 13:1 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. - John 13:34

Do everything in love - 1 Corinthians 16:14

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. - 1 Corinthians 13:13

Happy Valentine's Day - Through His Love, your sister in Christ,
