A Modern Day Prodigal Son

By Anonymous

I grew up with loving Christian parents. They were the type of parents that would show us Godly love, not just tell us. We went to church all my life and at the age of eight, I accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. At the age of eleven, we moved to a new city and with that move came Humanism! Not knowing what that was about and not really caring, I became anti-God in a very short time. At the age of seventeen, I stopped going to church and was on my way to freedom.

I was outgoing and loved to be around people, and for a long time did just that. I had lots of friends and loved to party. I was married just out of high school, but that lasted only four years and I was divorced. I thought now that my freedom was going to be my ticket for the best time of my life. Partying with drugs and booze was fun and it grew from a part time to a full time place in my life. People that I had met were selling and distributing drugs. It wasn't long before I too was planning and executing drug moves of very large quantities, sometimes a $100,000 week.

I became very confident that my life was okay and that everything was all right. However, my parents were always praying for my well being and me. But I was very far from letting God run my life. My life was becoming darker and darker and smaller and smaller but I was determined to have my cake and eat it too.

"And He walks with me and He talks with me and tells me I am His own..." In the Garden - Charles Austin Miles (1912)

Greetings from Texas! Spring time in Texas is one of the most beautiful times of the year in our great state. Our highways and byways are lined with wildflowers providing blankets of color. It is time to get outside and enjoy nature before the broiling summer heat sets in.

Sometimes, in order to Hang On to your Faith, you must find where you feel your faith most strongly. For some that place is their house of worship, for others it may be in music, art or in helping others. I feel my faith most when I am out in nature. I am strongest when I am on my knees in the garden. Faith, kneeling and nature. These topics are included in my conversations with others, my journaling, meditation, prayer and now I am sharing them with you.

Currently I am helping beloved relatives age in place. It is a rewarding experience and one that is filled with love, laughter, joy, sadness, frustration, satisfaction and beauty. I tend lovingly to my family members, providing food, water, nurturing and warmth. I try new things to make their lives better, more enjoyable, and if that idea doesn't work, I try something else. I rely on my faith, knowing He will guide me so that I will know what I need to continue to do, or when I need to move on.

These care giving activities are much like planning, watering, feeding and weeding a garden. I think gardeners and others who spend time in nature have a special ability to find beauty in the bleakest of landscapes. They are able to feed their faith as they work the soil, thin the seedlings and enjoy the bounty of harvest. Despite the activities of the day, if I can find 20 minutes to be on my knees in the garden I can end the day with calm certainty that everything will be fine. In nature I am a witness to God's faithfulness (Matthew 6:28-32). I see the power of God in the beauty of a blossom and the strength of a determined plant to bloom where ever it is planted.
There are many lessons of faith in nature. One lesson for me has been to know the power of kneeling in prayer instead of sitting with head bowed. There is a reverence in kneeling to pray that I don't feel while seated. I don't believe our prayers are heard differently depending upon our location or on the position of our bodies as we pray but it feels more natural to me. As we watch metamorphosis of a larva to a dragonfly or butterfly, we are reminded that from ugliness comes great beauty. How can you watch the miracle of life unfold and not know the power, gifts and majesty of God?

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.Job 12:7-10

Take your faith outside for a walk this spring, drop to your knees and pray. Restore your faith, refresh your soul. You can find strength, beauty and peace in God's creation.
The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. Psalm 24:1
